To send money from Japan to India, use a **registered money transfer company (資金移動業者)** from its app or website. On our sample of **¥100,000 sent on October 20, 2026**, **Remitly** gave the most to an Indian bank account: **INR 59,636** after a ¥90 fee. Western Union, SBI Remit and Wise were within about INR 350 of that. Japan Post Bank charges ¥3,000 before its rate. You need your residence card (在留カード) and My Number (個人番号), as of October 2026.

## How much does ¥100,000 to India cost?

We priced ¥100,000 paid in total by bank transfer, using quotes captured between 02:31 and 02:38 JST on October 20, 2026. Where a provider adds the fee on top, we took it out of the ¥100,000 first. Wise's mid-market rate at that moment was 1 JPY = 0.598977 INR. Rates change every day.

| Provider | Fee | Rate (1 JPY =) | Recipient gets (bank) | Total cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remitly | ¥90 | 0.5969 INR | INR 59,636 | 0.44% |
| Western Union | ¥800 | 0.5985 INR | INR 59,370 | 0.88% |
| SBI Remit | ¥1,000 | 0.5993 INR | INR 59,332 | 0.95% |
| Wise | ¥1,027 | 0.598977 INR | INR 59,283 | 1.03% |

Total cost compares what arrives with ¥100,000 at the mid-market rate. Remitly's figure is the regular price for a returning customer. New customers got a promotional rate of 0.5997 INR and no fee on their first ¥100,000.

Cash pickup: SBI Remit's cash rate was the same as its bank rate, so ¥100,000 gave INR 59,332. Western Union's cash rate was 0.5930 INR, so ¥100,000 gave INR 58,824.

### Fee only, rate not captured

| Provider | Fee for ¥100,000 | Payouts |
|---|---|---|
| Brastel Remit | ¥1,280 | Bank only (up to INR 495,000) |
| KYODAI Remittance | ¥1,480 | Bank, cash pickup |
| Seven Bank with Western Union | ¥1,950 cash pickup | Western Union agents |
| Japan Post Bank | ¥3,000, plus possible intermediary charges | Bank (SWIFT) |
| MUFG Bank (online) | ¥3,000, plus 0.050% (min ¥2,500) if sent in yen | Bank (SWIFT) |

Instarem also sends from Japan to India, from its app, for ¥5,000 to ¥1,000,000 per transfer. Its public calculator didn't give a clear price for ¥100,000, so we haven't compared it.

"n/a" means no evidence, and it's left out of the average.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Remitly | 8.7 | n/a | 9 | 8 | 7 | 10 | **8.7** |

| SBI Remit | 7.2 | 6 | 6 | 7 | 7 | 10 | **7.2** |

- **Remitly:** most rupees on our sample, with bank, cash pickup and UPI; no published delivery times.
- **Western Union:** second-best bank figure, plus cash pickup; no wallet option on our quote.
- **Wise:** mid-market rate and usually fast, but bank accounts only.
- **SBI Remit:** bank (NEFT) or cash pickup; bank transfers take 10 minutes to 3 business days.

All four are registered with the FSA: Remitly Japan (Kanto 00077), Western Union Japan (Kanto 00039), Wise Payments Japan (Kanto 00040) and SBI Remit (Kanto 00008).

**Best for:**

- **Most rupees to a bank account:** Remitly.
- **UPI:** Remitly, the only provider here that lists it.
- **Cash pickup:** SBI Remit, whose cash rate matched its bank rate on our sample.

## How does the money arrive in India?

- **Bank account:** every provider here. SBI Remit pays to banks in NEFT and needs the IFSC code, account number and recipient's name. Brastel says 1 to 3 business days.
- **UPI:** Remitly lists UPI. Wise's India page doesn't mention it.
- **Cash pickup:** SBI Remit through MoneyGram, usually about 10 minutes but sometimes up to two days. Western Union and KYODAI also offer cash pickup.

**Check the IFSC code:** SBI Remit asks for the IFSC code, account number and recipient's name, and it charges ¥1,000 when a remittance error forces a cancellation, according to its Vietnam page. Copy the details from the recipient's passbook or banking app.

## How do I send money to India step by step?

## Can I pay in cash without a bank transfer?

Yes, with some providers. This helps if you're new in Japan and your [bank account](/money/banking/bank-account-for-foreigners-japan/) isn't ready yet.

- **SBI Remit at FamilyMart:** pay cash at the Multi Copier with a 17-digit order number, up to ¥100,000 per deposit, 07:00 to 21:00. The deposit fee is ¥800 for ¥50,000 to ¥100,000, on top of the remittance fee.
- **SBI Remit's Remit Card:** deposit at Japan Post ATMs for ¥330 up to ¥50,000 and ¥500 above, or at Lawson Bank ATMs for ¥300.
- **Brastel's free card:** deposit at Japan Post Bank ATMs for ¥440 (¥1,000 to ¥110,000).
- **Seven Bank ATMs:** since May 2026, KYODAI customers can deposit cash at Seven Bank ATMs with a card or the スマホATM smartphone service.
- **Western Union:** accepts cash at convenience stores (コンビニ払い).

Remitly doesn't accept cash at ATMs or credit cards from Japan. Wise is cheapest when you pay by bank transfer; a debit card raised its fee on our sample to about ¥3,700 to ¥4,900.

## What do I need to sign up in Japan?

- **Residence card (在留カード).** Wise, SBI Remit, Western Union, Remitly and Brastel accept it as ID for foreign residents.
- **My Number.** The overseas transfer reporting law requires it for every transfer abroad, including through money transfer companies. Remitly takes a My Number card or residence card, plus a selfie and a short video.
- **A way to pay in yen.** Remitly takes bank transfers and Japan-issued Visa or Mastercard debit cards. The cash options are above.

Each transfer through a Type 2 provider is capped at ¥1,000,000 by law. For each transfer over ¥1,000,000, your provider files a report with the tax office. For tax questions, ask a tax accountant (税理士). Our [send money from Japan guide](/money/remittance/send-money-from-japan/) explains the limits and the cash options.
