Privacy policy

This policy explains what information japanhow.com handles, why, who else processes it, and how to exercise your rights under Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information (個人情報の保護に関する法律, APPI).

Who is responsible

japanhow.com is operated by Hana Digital ("we"). Hana Digital is the business operator handling personal information (個人情報取扱事業者) for this site. Contact for all privacy matters: hello@japanhow.com.

The short version

  • You can read every page without an account, and the site has no forms.
  • Our analytics set no cookies and don't build a profile of you.
  • We don't show ads, use advertising trackers or sell personal information.
  • If you email us, we use your message only to reply.

Analytics

We count visits with Umami, an open-source analytics tool, self-hosted at pulse.rykit.com. It sets no cookies and doesn't store your IP address. It records the page you visit, the page that sent you, your browser, operating system, device type, screen size, language and approximate country, plus search terms typed into our site search. We use these numbers only to see which guides people read and what they look for, so we can improve the site.

Hosting and security logs

The site is served by Cloudflare, Inc. To deliver pages and protect the site from attacks, Cloudflare processes technical data such as your IP address, browser details and the time of your request, and keeps it in short-term logs. We don't combine this data with anything else to identify you.

Transfers outside Japan

Cloudflare, Inc. is based in the United States and processes data on servers around the world. The United States has no single national data protection law equivalent to the APPI; protection there comes from federal sector-specific laws and state laws. Cloudflare commits to protecting this data under its data processing terms and is certified under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework. More information: Cloudflare's privacy policy.

Email

If you email us, we receive your email address, name (if you give it) and message. We use them only to reply, to check and fix the page you wrote about, and to keep a record of corrections. We delete messages we no longer need.

Your browser

If you switch to dark mode, your choice is saved in your browser's local storage. It never leaves your device. We use no other cookies or local storage.

Forms and leads

The site has no forms today. Before we add any form that collects personal information, for example to request a quote from a partner, we will update this policy to say what each form collects, who receives it and for what purpose, and we will ask for your consent before passing anything to a third party.

Your rights

Under the APPI you may ask us to disclose the personal information we hold about you (開示), to correct, add to or delete it (訂正・追加・削除), to stop using it or to delete it (利用停止・消去), and to stop providing it to third parties (第三者提供の停止). You may also ask for records of any third-party provision.

Email hello@japanhow.com with your request. We may ask you to confirm your identity, and we will respond without undue delay. In practice, the only personal information we hold is in emails you have sent us.

How we protect information

  • We collect as little personal information as the site needs.
  • Access to our email inbox and analytics is limited to the people who run the site and protected by passwords used for nothing else.
  • The site is served only over encrypted connections (HTTPS).

Children

japanhow is written for adults living in Japan. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when what we collect changes, and change the date at the top. Questions or complaints about how we handle personal information: hello@japanhow.com.
